Abstract : A combined molecular beam-mass spectrometer system has been used to detect the presence of stable ion clusters. It has been found that relative metastable peak intensities provide the best indication of stability, and this is supported by results from the study of water and argon ion clusters. Some preliminary results on an experimental and theoretical study of doubly charged water clusters are also presented and discussed. In particular, it is suggested that the water molecules in these clusters are in a highly ordered state.
