Abstract : This report discusses a number of issues that serve as research goals for the discovery of general principles of knowledge representation. It is concerned with the question of what constitutes a good representational system and a good set of representational primitives to deal with an open-ended range of knowledge domains. The discussion is illustrated with techniques and concepts evolved in the development of the knowledge representation system KL-ONE.
