Abstract : The work accomplished during the 6th year of our contract was aimed at determining the contribution of pulmonary and chest wall mechanics to the ventilatory response to exercise and exercise in hypoxia; the effects of long-term hypoxia and of exercise in normoxia and hypoxia on respiratory muscle metabolism and morphology in the rat; and the effects of long-term hypoxia and different levels of hypoxia on ventilation and periodic breathing during sleep in hypoxia.
