Abstract : In terms of manpower, time and money, the single largest investment that must be made in the acquisition and maintenance of a large and complex computer system is the investment made in software. In response to this situation, DOD began an intensive and comprehensive research and development effort in an attempt to reduce, if not eliminate the inherent problems associated with software system design. The end result of this effort was the creation of the Ada programming language. This thesis will examine the development of the language, focusing attention on the concepts and features which make Ada a potential 'software crisis' solution. These concepts and features will be further examined as to the extent to which they support the utilization of Ada as a program design language.
