Abstract : Studies were made to determine the feasibility of performing all aspects of pretransfusion testing utilizing low ionic strength solutions and shipping materials necessary for the use of LISS solutions considering military needs. Emphasis in our previous study and in all published studies had been on the cross-match test since is was logical to first determine if the use of LISS offered significant advantages over current compatibility test procedures. We evaluated the use of LISS suspended red blood cells (RBC) for use in all aspects of pretransfusion testing: ABO antigen typing, Rh antigen typing, various additional red blood cell antigen typing, and antibody identification. Other studies performed demonstrated that the use of LISS will increase unnecessary antiboy detection (i.e., clinically insignificant, complement binding antibodies) when using polyspecific antiglobulin reagent.
