Abstract : The implementation of a recently proposed inversion scheme for the scattering of acoustic plane waves by a layered ocean bottom is described. As a result of applying the forward scattering approximation to a local wave decomposition of the acoustic field, the reflection coefficient is obtained as a nonlinear Fourier transform of the logarithmic derivative of admittance. Inversion of the integral transform enables the recovery of admittance versus depth via numerical integration of the impulse response of the sea bottom. Separate recovery of both density and sound speed profiles requires two impulse responses corresponding to two district grazing angles. The capability of the inversion scheme is illustrated for three inhomogeneous models for which bandlimited impulse responses were generated synthetically. (Author)
