Abstract : All currently operational and planned automatic data processing systems and data networks of the Department of Defense (DoD) that require long-haul and area data communications support are slated to become subscribers to the Defense Data Network (DDN) as required by the Office of the Secretary of Defense. The term subscriber refers not only to systems but also to those individuals with the managerial and technical responsibilities for the systems. Since the advent of the DDN, this group of action officers, managers, and systems analysts has been faced with the issue of how to connect their systems to the DDN. This Guide has been prepared to assist these decision-makers. The Guide explains the available alternatives for connecting systems to the DDN and the rationale for choosing among them. The selection options are based upon the communication requirements of the subscriber and the interfacing methods that will support these requirements. An appendix provides a detailed interface specification that could be included in subscriber interface acquisition packages.
