Abstract : The literature concerning the application of fracture mechanics to the growth of creep cracks is discussed. As an introduction it is shown that linear elastic fracture mechanics have been applied successfully to the residual strength of brittle materials, crack growth due to stress corrosion and crack growth due to fatigue. Next the methods are discussed to account for plasticity. Then a survey is made of the attempts to correlate the crack growth rate under creep conditions with the stress intensity factor, the net section stress, the reference stress, the crack opening displacement rate, the contour integral J and the contour integral J *. A few sections are devoted to alternative methods to calculate J and J*. A survey is made also of theoretical predictions of the crack growth rate as a function of parameters that are considered to be determining. The report ends with a discussion and a few conclusions.
