Abstract : Coal, nuclear energy, synthetic fuels, renewable energy sources, and conservation were examined as alternative energy sources to petroleum for the United States. These sources offer feasible alternatives for petroleum and will allow for the maintenance of US security. The US can and must enter a multipronged, four phased program designed to reduce oil imports to zero by 1990 and progress toward solar and biomass as primary sources of energy by the year 2000. Technology and domestic energy sources exists for the US and her allies to become energy independent. (Author)
