Abstract : The Dept. of Ocean Engineering at M.I.T. has been involved with the production of a robot submarine since the Summer of 1975. A first generation submarine was built, tested and was used for two years before a second generation design was begun. The second generation design was considerably more ambitious than the first, but the design was essentially finished by the Spring of 1979. Development work for the submarine and the production of actual hardware was begun in the Summer of 1979 and was pursued by two separate paths - the electronic systems and the mechanical systems. This thesis describes the mechanical systems development.
