Abstract : Sound is generated thermoacoustically when a modulated laser beam illuminates a volume of water. This report describes an experimental system developed to study the effects of moving the thermoacoustic source through the water. Motion of the source produces a direction dependent Doppler shift and, in some cases, an increase in the efficiency of the thermoacoustic process. (Author)
