Abstract : A 1:36-scale model study was used to verify design of the Willow Creek Dam spillway and stilling basin and to evaluate downstream flooding conditions both with and without the project. Three alternative stilling basin geometries having design discharges of 11,700, 18,000, and 91,700 cfs were evaluated. For each design, discharge conditions were identified at which basin sweepout began and when basin sweepout was complete. Downstream flow conditions were evaluated during each condition. The prototype design was based on the 18,000-cfs discharge (regulated winterflood probable maximum flood). Willow Creek Dam is a roller-compacted concrete (RCC) structure. Since the spillway face is the outer edge of the RCC, the model was used to evaluate the effect of potential spillway on flow conditions in and downstream from the stilling basin. (Author)
