Abstract : A method proposed for the nondestructive testing of method matrix composite wires is studied theoretically and experimentally. X or gamma are used to detect the void fraction in these wires by immersing the wires in a bath which has the same linear attenuation coefficient as the matrix material for the x-ray spectrum that is being used. It is concluded that the proposed technique can be expected to detect void fractions of the order of 1% in aluminum matrix, graphite fiber composite wires at a practical linear wire speed.
