Abstract : Scheduling USAF aircrew members for proficiency training is a complex information management problem. This study describes the development of a prototype microcomputer decision support system (DSS) for aircrew scheduling. The DSS was developed from a model of the pilot scheduling process at the 16th Special Operations Squadron (MAC). Prototyping was used to compensate for the users' and designers' lack of experience with DSS, and to allow incremental enhancements to the computer programs. The demonstration of an initial prototype DSS to prospective users elicited positive responses to the DSS and substantive suggestions for improving the DSS. The authors conclude that microcomputer decision support for aircrew scheduling is feasible and that prototyping is an appropriate development methodology. Listings of the BASIC language programs and a users' guide are provided in the appendices. (Author)
