Abstract : The rate constants for quenching of He(23S) and of Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe in the 3P2 state by copper atoms have been measured at room temperature using a flowing afterglow technique and found to be 0.93, < 0.2, 1.4, 2.3 and 2.6 x 10 to the minus 10th cu cm/sec, respectively. The rate constants have been measured indirectly applying an internal calibration method in which the copper atoms are used as both quenchers and tracers. It is suggests that the relatively small quenching rate of Ne(3P2) by CU might contribute to its successful use as a buffer gas in the copper-vapor laser.
