Abstract : This report examines the planning and development of commercial shallow-drift inland waterways. The equipment and structures necessary for their development and utilization are addressed. Chapter Two outlines the history of inland waterways in America to provide a prospective of their potential impact. Chapter Three discusses some of the main social, technical, and economic problems associated with planning commercial waterways and ports. In this chapter, and throughout the rest of this report, reference is made to the waterways of the United States when examples are deemed necessary. Chapter Four examines the types of waterway systems, their advantages and disadvantages. Chapter Five discusses channel design in relation to the characteristics of the vessels which are commonly utilized on American waterways. Chapter Six discusses the types of vessels presently being used on the inland waterways of the United States. Chapter Seven deals with the maintenance of inland waterways and will center on dredging. Chapter Eight addresses the cost analysis of inland waterway development. Chapter Nine is a summary of conclusions and recommendations.
