Abstract : As a modern organization, the military becomes more aware of the need for transition, and it often becomes, itself, an agent of change. In the context of development, the military often stands as the most modern institution in the country. In South Korea, its enormous size has made it the most powerful and best organized group within Korean society imparting modern values to the still traditional milieu. In the case of Korea, the military has a double mission of playing a central role of contributing to the nation's development while also deterring war from breaking out as the foremost line of defense against the Communists. the military, as a modern institution, has significantly contributed to the development of the Republic of Korea. This study is a documentation of the role of the armed forces and the contribution of the armed forces as a part of national development. (Author)
