Abstract : The purpose of this investigation was to determine the mechanical behavior (i.e. strength and thermal shock resistance) of silicon-carbide/boron-nitride composites and to test D.P.H. Hasselman's theory for high/low modulus composites. The primary objectives of this study were, therefore, as follows: to experimentally determine the material properties and thermal stress resistance parameters for SiC-BN composites, to ascertain if the thermal stress resistance of SiC is significantly improved as predicted by Hasselman's theory, and to determine how the strength of SiC-BN composites varies with changes in BN-content and temperature.
