Abstract : The IR laser excitation of an adbond is studied by both a quantum mechanical generalized master equation approach and a classical generalized Langevin approach. The role of phonons in the energy flow between the adbond and the surface is considered. The latter approach looks further at local heating via direct excitation of surface atoms. It is seen that the Markovian approximation is in general inadequate, and that local heating is an important mechanism for desorption. (Author)
