Abstract : The authors describe a new type of electric probe for mapping the radial current density profile of high-energy, high current electron beams. The idea of developing an electrically sensitive probe for these conditions was originally suggested to one of the authors during a year's visit to the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The resulting probe is intended for use on the Experimental Test Accelerator (ETA) and the Advanced Test Accelerator at that laboratory. This report discusses in detail: the mechanical design, the electrical response, and temperature effects, as they pertain to the electric probe, and describe the first experimental results obtained using this probe on ETA.
