Abstract : Two experiments were performed using a modification of the subtractive approach to the partitioning of human reaction time. This investigation provided information concerning the effects of display size, classification rules, and interference stimuli on input and output latencies. The major findings from this investigation showed that input and output latencies were affected by different independent variables and provided information regarding the cognitive processes within a binary classification task not observed with previous methods. Suggestions for further research are presented.
