Abstract : Three concepts are used to illustrate how a small number of simple mechanisms can generate a wide diversity of complex biological phenomena, as well as parametric experimental tests of the models that simulate these phenomena. One is the classifical concept that a membrane equation can model fast electrical responses in cells. The second is the concept that mass action processes can be coupled to the membrane equation as conductance terms. The third is the concept that gating processes can be used to model the mass action dynamics of chemical transmitters.
