Abstract : This report describes the work performed for the Navy with regard to the use of poly(acetylene), (CH)x, as a cathode material in a lithium/thionyl (Li/SOC12) battery. The objective of the project was three fold: (1) To characterize and understand the electrochemistry of (CH)x in a detailed manner, (2) To study the compatibility of (CH)x with SOC12 and (3) To synthesize and investigate 'modified' (CH)x polymers which may possess more desirable properties than the parent polymer.
