Abstract : The sliding contact (frictional) behavior of sintered alpha silicon carbide (SASC) was studied over the range of room temperature to 1400 deg C. The results strongly indicate that a nonelastic mechanism, probably a viscous mechanism, is contributing to the contact behavior of SASC at elevated temperatures. In addition, zirconia, which does not form a viscous layer, was studied for comparison purposes. (Author)
