Abstract : Derived is a general, nonlocal dispersion equation which describes the long wavelength limit of several interchange instabilities (viz., Rayleigh-Taylor, E x B gradient drift, and current convective). Analytical expressions for the growth rate of these modes are presented in both the collisional and collisionless regimes. The scaling of these growth rates with wavenumber (k) and the Pedersen conductivity ratio (M) are explicitly stated. (Author)
