Abstract : Starting from the expression for the cooperative ionization energy loss by a pair of relativistic particles, a formula is derived for the beam-density effect on ionization energy loss for a finite length beam with a Gaussian radial profile. As an example, this formula is evaluated for a 50 MeV, 10 KA electron pulse of one meter length interacting with weakly ionized nitrogen. In this case a large beam-density effect on energy loss was obtained and its dependence on the ionization state of the medium was demonstrated. The relationship of this formulation of energy loss with previous single-particle and beam-plasma loss concepts is discussed. (Author)
