Abstract : The extremely low surface resistance exhibited by superconductors makes possible some interesting and important applications in microwave electronics. Chief among these are (1) the use of high-field superconducting cavities as high-power, coherent, pulsed, microwave sources and (2) the use of low-loss, low-dispersion rf striplines as communication links or delay elements in high-speed digital and analog signal processing circuits. The specific interests of this contract were the former. For these applications the most promising superconductors are those with a high transition temperature (high T sub c), since they have the best potential performance characteristics (lowest losses and highest magnetic field breakdown). In addition, because of their higher operating temperature, these superconductors may be interfaced with small cryogenic refrigerators. The primary objective of this program has been to study the rf properties of the high-T sub c, A15 superconductors E.G., Nb3Sn (T sub c approx. 18K) and V3Si (T sub c approx 15K), and in particular, to establish their rf superconducting characteristics and the relationship between these characteristics and their material properties.
