Abstract : This report represents the fourth annual summary of research carried out under Office of Naval Research. The objective of this research is to obtain a better understanding of the metallic substrate/organic coating/interface system so that improvements may be made in corrosion control of metals by painting. The report this year includes a summary of progress made in 16 different components of the program. These activities are arranged for convenience into those primarily concerned with (a) corrosion at the interface, (b) the chemistry of the metal/coating interface, (c) the properties of the coating, (d) the properties of iron oxides with particular relevance to the painting of rusted steel.
