Abstract : Dimensions and design characteristics of a one-quarter scale model of the PMV as proposed for installation in the MERADCOM Air Cushion Barge (ACB) were developed. A test device was built with provision for variation of the spring constant and damping coefficient in order to validate the equation of motion previously developed. Because it was necessary to provide a variable feedback area, the equation of motion did not accurately represent the dynamic system actually tested. Within the matrix of parameters tested the valve was found to operate satisfactorily with a rather wide range of values for the key parameters. Satisfactory operation means that the valve closes automatically within a short period following venting of the jupe and reopens without undue delay following resealing of the jupe. Owing to the absence of true dynamic similarity, not only of the test device but also of the air supply system, design characteristics of a full-scale system could not be established from the test of a single valve. It is recommended that a system of four jupes, each with a PMV, with a common air supply be tested prior to further development of the installation in the ACB.
