Abstract : This is the final report a NAVAIR sponsored program addressing aspects of the composite and adhesive materials requirements of V/STOL aircraft. The primary tasks were to develop and characterize high modulus, high toughness resins with use temperatures of 350 F to 450 F or higher; to develop graphite fiber reinforced composite fabrication technology for newly developed resin matrices; to develop failure criteria for composite design optimization; and to establish appropriate quality control parameters. During the course of the program a variety of matrix materials and adhesives were studied in the various tasks. Three matrix materials were picked for detailed study on the basis of performance and processing characteristics. They are NRL C10-diamide, Narmco 5208 epoxy and Hexcel F-178 bis-maleimide. Composites made from then with T-300 graphite fiber formed the key test set in the Failure Analysis Task. Detailed chemical and thermochemical characterization was carried out on these resins to provide a data base for developing quality assurance procedures. This report covers the final phase of the program.
