Abstract : The purpose of this study was to determine the relative effect of using the Poisson approximation in the Wartime Assessment and Requirements System (WARS) assessment subroutine and to gain a better understanding of the exact error-causing mechanisms involved. To accomplish this two Fortran computer programs were developed, one to compute the expected number of not mission capable aircraft using the accurate mathematical calculations, the other to compute the same figure using the Poisson approximation. These programs were used to evaluate the approximation caused error for different parts hierarchies and data sets. The analysis identified two distinct causes for the error induced by the approximation. These sources of error were confirmed by running test cases specifically tailored to eliminate the error-causing characteristics and noting that no approximation error resulted. The approximation error was found to fluctuate in sign and magnitude for different cases. Sensitivity analysis was performed to identify the sensitive parameters. (Author)
