Abstract : Static fatigue resistance of optical fibers has been achieved through passivation of the fiber surface by a novel CVD(Chemical Vapor Deposition) silicon oxynitirde coating which is deposited on-line during fiber pulling. Static fatigue susceptibility less than one-sixth that of conventional fiber has been achieved. In addition, high proof stress yields have been achieved at 2.1 GPa (300,000 psi). In tests of the most recent 21,150 m of MCVD(Modified Chemical Vapor Deposition) fiber proof tested at 2.1 GPa, nine pieces longer than 900 m passed the test.
