Abstract : The Federal Aviation Administration is currently reviewing noise certification procedures for general aviation propeller-driven aircraft. As part of this review noise measurements were made for take-offs and flyovers of several propeller-driven aircraft at Dulles International Airport. The data from the tests were analyzed by FAA in terms of the A-weighted sound level. This analysis indicated that there were general differences between take-off and flyover sound levels. The intent of this report is to present a review of the data without going into detailed analyses. Possible reasons for differences between take-off and flyover sound levels are explored and certain conclusions drawn. Recommendations are then made for future work in order to provide a more-detailed understanding of the physical phenomena involved.
