Abstract : The second generation Liquid-Frozen Blood Bank System is capable of providing frozen red cells, frozen platelets, fresh frozen plasma, and cryoprecipitate. Red cell concentrates can be frozen after after storage at 4 C for 3 to 6 days in CPD or CPDA-1 anticoagulants (non-rejuvenated red cells); red cell concentrates can be rejuvenated and frozen after storage at 4 C for 22 to 25 days in CPD and for 35 days in CPDA-1 (outdated-rejuvenated red cells). Platelets can be isolated from 4 to 8 units of whole blood and pooled or they can be isolated from a normal healthy volunteer by an apheresis procedure using a mechanical cell separating system. The platelets can be frozen with 6% DMSO in a polyvinylchloride plastic bag and stored frozen at -80 C for at least 1 year with satisfactory results. The second generation Liquid-Frozen Blood Bank System can provide 20% of the total red cells, 100% of the platelets, and 100% of the fresh frozen plasma and cryoprecipitate to support a 250- to 1000-bed hospital.
