Abstract : Work was aimed at defining the limitations of the lung's gas exchange capabilities and those of the mechanical properties of the lung and chest wall during exercise in hypoxia, exploring the role of Carbon dioxide (or alkalosis) in the genesis of periodic breathing during sleep in hypoxia and further exploration of the role of central nervous system neurotransmitter metabolism and cerebral acid production in ventilatory acclimatization to chronic hypoxia.
