Abstract : The user-system interface (USI) to computer-based information systems can require a sizable investment in software design. This report discuss tools and methods developed at ESD/MITRE under Project 5720 that show promise for improving USI design in the acquisition of computer-based information systems. A checklist of functional capabilities can be used to help define USI requirements, and to generate draft functional specifications. A comprehensive compilation of guidelines for USI design can provide the basis for establishing system-specific design rules. Illustrative samples are presented to indicate contractual mechanisms for applying these tools, including reference in system contractors, and stipulation of deliverable data items to document USI design.
