Abstract : This investigation studied the task of configuration management of computer software systems. First, a detailed definition of configuration management from the perspectives of project management and project engineers was developed. This definition was used to conduct a requirements analysis of the support required in automated programming environments for the configuration management task. Based on these requirements, evaluation criteria were developed that were appropriate for the evaluation of configuration management tools designed to satisfy the 1980 Stoneman requirements document. These evaluation criteria were used to evaluate the November 1983 release of the Army's Ada Language System. The requirements and evaluation criteria developed in this thesis are designed to provide designers and purchasers of Ada Programming Support Environments (APSE) with the tools necessary to determine the effectiveness of an APSE implementation in supporting the task of configuration management of large software projects developed for embedded computer systems.
