Abstract : Photodissociation of the positive molecular ions of NO, OH, SO, SH, oxygen, and methyliodide and the doubly-charged molecular ion of nitrogen is observed at visible and ultraviolet laser wavelengths using ion photofragment spectroscopy. The wavelength dependence for the production of photofragments from each of these species reflects highly structured absorption spectra of electronic transitions into predissociated excited states lying in the region of their lowest energy dissociation asymptotes. The absorption spectra, coupled with kinetic energy analysis of the photofragments produced in the dissociations, allow identification of the absorbing and dissociating states in these ions and determination of their molecular constants.
