Abstract : The emphasis on salinity measurements in coastal areas has obscured the development of remote sensing of salinity in the open ocean. In part, this is due to the homogeneity of haline fields in the open ocean; however, one area where salinity measurement is important is the region along the edge of polar ice, the Marginal Ice Zone (MIZ). This report discusses microwave radiometric measurements of the MIZ and other areas with similar variations in surface salinity. The physics of the S-Band radiometer is discussed.
