Abstract : This thesis deals with the reasons the Caribbean is of interest economically and militarily to the United States. It examines factors affecting foreign policy formulation; essential materials, supplies, and trade routes; Soviet and Cuban activities in the region; and political, economic, and military recommendations based on these aspects to ensure the continued existence of the Caribbean as a free area, secure from Soviet and Cuban involvement and interference. In so doing, it examines why the region is important to United States security and economic prosperity.
