Abstract : The basic motivation of the multi-backend database system (MDBS) is to develop an architecture which spreads the work of the database system among multiple backends. It is a major aim of this system to allow capacity growth by the use of additional disk drives and performance improvement by the use of additional backends. However, to verify the design and implementation, it is necessary to test the capability of MDBS in capacity growth and performance gain. Three tools for the performance and capacity tests are investigated. The first tool is the file generation package which creates test files for any artificial database. The second tool is the database load subsystem which loads the artificial database into MDBS. The third tool is the request generation package. This package creates test requests to query MDBS. The following methodology is used to create an effective tool. First, the properties of an ideal tool are described. Then available existing programs are reviewed and evaluated to determine which program best meets the desired features. Lastly, the programs are upgraded to ensure that they are compatible with the current implementation, and meet the desired features. The main goal is to develop the necessary tools to generate tests in measuring the extensibility of MDBS.
