Abstract : Many different materials have been used by orthopedic and maxillofacial surgeons to repair bony deficiencies. This review was limited to those materials that have been shown to be tissue-tolerant and biodegradable and included certain synthetic polymers and ceramics. Several possible applications for these agents were offered. Some terms and concepts were discussed that were germane to an understanding of polymers and ceramics.
