Abstract : An advanced Directional Shear Cell has been built, proved and delivered to the Geotechnical Div., Waterways Experimental Station, U.S. Corps of Engineers. This device shears soil in plane strain and will impose any desired rotation of the principal stress directions in the plane of strain at any stage of a chosen stress path. Undisturbed samples from 125 mm diameter field cores can be tested for initial anisotropy and subsequent induced anisotropy. Reports are made on manufacture, apparatus, capability, and proving tests.
