Abstract : In solids with a coupling between guest and host atoms, a new mechanism of cooperative transitions is possible since the centers formed by the guest atoms involve surrounding host atoms. This leads to orbital overlap between centers via the host atoms which can result in cooperative transitions. The cooperative transition moments are estimated for rare gas solids doped by halogens.
