Abstract : In Oct. 1985, 305 air-deployed expendable bathythermograph profiles were taken in a region of large-scale thermohaline steps. This report presents a map in the location of the staircase field during this time, contours of the depths of the 6 -26 C isotherms, and individual profile plots. Mesoscale flow patterns are inferred from the isotherm plots, and the location of the staircases in relation to the flow field is discussed. Improved temperature and depth conversion equations for AXBTs are summarized. These findings show that in fall 1985, the main body of the staircase field lay between 8 -12 N and 48 -59 W, and extended northward to nearly 19 N between 54 and 59 W. The mesoscale flow patterns indicate that during this period the North Equatorial Current entered the region from the east over a broad area north of 10 deg N. Much of the flow continued westward into the Caribbean, but the upper several hundred meters of the southern portion turned southward between 50 and 54 W and flowed back to the east.
