Abstract : The U.S. Army Counterair Operations Study applies the doctrine set forth in the Army's keystone warfighting manual, FM 100-5, Operations, to the principles of counterair operations as described in JCS PUb 26, Joint Doctrine for Theater Counterair Operations. Using terminology established in FM 100-5, the study addresses the issues of air superiority and force protection as they related to the third dimension of the air-land battlefield. Counterair forces are described at each level of war and are related to offensive and defensive maneuver. Joint and Combined operations are also discussed. The importance of successful counterair operations to the ground battle is emphasized throughout the work. (Author)
