Abstract : The preliminary design effort included the establishment of design baselines, configuration update, array system component tradeoff studies, and analyses of the array dynamic characteristics. Sensor and sensor cable tradeoff studies were conducted. Array performance sensitivity analyses were conducted which included the performance criteria and the sensitivity of variations of array design parameters. Two types of analyses, static and dynamic were employed to perform the study of major array design parameters (buoy, cable, anchor, array mooring, and deployment/retrieval configurations). Array component tradeoff studies were conducted. Kevlar and polyester were identified as suitable material candidates for the mooring cable design. Kevlar was selected as the strength member for all mooring cables. Array leg cable size and weight, cable assembly design, a tapered sensor cable, and cable fairing were studied. The major uncertainty in the tradeoff study of the mooring cable system is the selection of an effective cable strumming suppression device. Tradeoff studies on buoy shapes, buoy net buoyancy and distribution, and buoy material and construction were conducted. A state-of-the-art review of electrical cable design was completed. The length of the shore cable has a direct impact on cable design and the current range of 25,000 to 35,000 feet should be narrowed. An array dynamic analysis was conducted, and it included a cable strumming analysis and identification of the cable dynamic response characteristics.
