Abstract : There has been much recent interest in signal and image processing using optical techniques. In particularly, there is new interest in the field of digital optics and all optical computing. One of the many devices that have been developed for use in this field is the Zinc Selenide (ZnSe) Interference Filter which has been demonstrated to operate in a bistable manner and can therefore be considered for use in architectures which operate with binary optical logic. This memorandum reports a series of experiments which were performed to assess the Zinc Selenide Interference Filters that were designed by Edinburgh Instruments for the demonstration of optical bistability. Most of the measurements were made on the original batch of samples and showed some damage when cycled for periods in excess of 20 minutes. Some of the techniques we developed to access and observe this damage will be described. Later devices have been demonstrated elsewhere to have better damage thresholds.
