Abstract : The goal of this research program has been explore and understand the interaction of electromagnetic radiation with the low lying excitation spectra in condensed matter and on clean metal surfaces. Both coherent optical, infrared, and far infrared techniques have been required to probe the dynamics of these many body systems both in and out of thermal equilibrium. The formation of persistent spectral holes is one new aspect of solid state spectroscopy. Another is the discovery of large far infrared nonlinearities in high mobility two dimensional electron gas semiconducting systems.
