Abstract : A synoptic diagnosis of two intensive observation periods (IOP 1 and 9) of the Genesis of Atlantic Lows Experiment (GALE) is conducted. Operationally available data and some preliminart GALE data were used to describe key synoptic and subsynoptic features that are important to the coastal and ocean cycogenesis, and explain the evolution of these features is addressed. A verification of the Navy Operational Regional Analysis and Prediction System (NORAPS) forecasts of these systems is conducted. In both cases mesoscale structure was important in understanding the cyclgenesis event. Cyclogensis of both IOP 1 and 9 represent more complex interactions and processes than the simplified cyclogenesis suggested by the quasi-geostrophic theory.
